Of the two, I would get the 5DIII and stick with a prime until you can afford a nice zoom.

Sharpness IMO is over rated.  I doubt anyone would say the 24-70 is “soft”  Only time I can see sharpness becoming soft is on my Zeiss prime when comparing center sharpness to edge sharpness.  My 24-70 is sharp all around, mainly because its not as “prime sharp” to begin with :)
