how do you get your models so relaxed? when i shoot they seem like they aren't opening themselves as much as your models. ps i don't mean topless wise, i don't shoot topless but the models i shoot seem so stiff. any other recommendations than music?
Unfortunately there is no short answer to this question. I get asked this a lot. In summary it comes down to personally, rapport, connection, motivation, energy and trust.
have you ever lowered your rates if someone tells you to? do you always stick to the rates as in if they cant pay your rates then you simply wont shoot with them? because i had an agency model ask me and i gave her my rates; she came back saying she only can pay half of that. the thing is her look isn't strong enough to make my portfolio so i would just be shooting her as a regular client.
no. Just remember those who ask for discounts usually expect double the work. Only time I give discounts are for existing clients on specific jobs.
Hi Kesler, Would you ever consider shooting a Black Model one day? or is it just strictly whites?
I’ll shoot anyone that fits the concept or if I like their look. I don’t get approached by many ethnic models. I guess mainly because my book is predominately Caucasian models. To answer your question, yes I do shoot black models.
Love your work! How many pictures do you take during a shoot and how much time do you spend choosing the best ones? I really need to take so f***ing many pictures and choosing the best ones is total nightmare. Any tips on avoiding this? When I take less pictures and spend less time choosing the result is never as good as when I go all out :/
I think you answered your own question, LOL.
Go all out and get better photos. I’m the same way, sometimes I take a little and get what I want, and sometimes I get shutter itchy and shoot a lot. Go with your gut, shoot until you are comfortable.
Your portfolio is so amazing! I really enjoy the darker feel of your shots; esp in your BWs where there's great contrast but still a darker tone. I can do a little editing in photoshop, but haven't dabbled in Lightroom at all. Do you do most of your editing in LM or PS? If you don't mind my asking, what editing tools should I play with to get that kind of darker look and feel?Thank you!
All of my B&W stuff is done in LR. and Exported to CS5 for curve adjustment, if any. Otherwise its just LR. Needless to say 2-3 minutes and you’re done.
Kesler, how often do models decide to not shoot nudes with you, and does it affect your decision to work with them, or how you work with them? Hav you shot with any models that have never shot nudes before, and you were their first?
I’ve decline working with a model who agrees to do nude quite often. If I’m not digging the model, I won’t shoot her regardless if she does nudes or not. Nudity is not a payment.
If I like the models look, I’ll shoot her regardless whether she shoots nudes or not. Although these shoots I’ll require styling and some sort of concept/ storyboard.
A lot of the time I like to try out new things, new locations, or just shoot. Most of these impromptu shoots I always have models bring their own clothes and do their own make up. For these types of shoot where you have to rely on the model for styling, I prefer to work with someone comfortable with nudity. If what she brings doesn’t end up working out we can enjoy shooting sexy, raw, natural stuff, or just experiment.
Occasionally I’ll test with models who doesn’t shoot nudity and brings their own stuff. Currently I’m into the androgynous look. Boyish figure, masculine, short hair, gap tooth, sabertooth or anything I feel can add to my book.
Again, nudity is not a payment. If a model is not comfortable with nudity that’s perfectly fine. Can’t expect everyone to be. If she wants to shoot and doesn’t offer anything that I can benefit from, I’ll treat it as a job offer and quote rates.
